While today it offers modern facilities with inventive and stylish design, the lighthouse has enjoyed a fascinating and colourful history, the signs of which are still clearly visible. Petitions for a lighthouse at Beachy Head began as early as 1691, due to the high number of wrecks caused by the wild seas that crash against the beautiful but dangerous coastline.

The lighthouse was damaged during the Second World War, and was later transported back 57ft further away from the edge of the cliff as a result of erosion danger. After changing hands a number of times, it was lovingly restored by its current owners during 2009, and finally opened its doors as a breathtaking boutique hotel in March 2010.
